The 1928 series reduced large-denomination notes to the smaller format that remains standard today, but the $5,000 was never meant for ordinary commerce. These moved between Federal Reserve banks to settle interbank balances — a function largely invisible to the public. Fewer than ten examples are known to survive, making this among the rarest legal-tender instruments ever issued by the United States government.
The "Redeemable in Gold" clause was stripped from Federal Reserve notes in 1933 when Roosevelt suspended the gold standard domestically, rendering this specific obligation obsolete on surviving examples almost immediately after issue.
