Obverse description Central intaglio vignette of President James Madison in three-quarter portrait, his name inscribed on the cartouche below. The denomination 5000 appears in large numerals at all four corners against an intricate green and black guilloche underprint. A circular Federal Reserve district seal with the letter 'J' appears to the left of the portrait, flanked by the gold redemption clause in small letterpress text, while an ornate Treasury seal is positioned to the right.
