This trial strike was produced in 1989 as part of the NBP's evaluation process ahead of what would become an increasingly chaotic monetary period — within two years, Poland's inflation had spiraled past 600%, rendering the entire 500-złoty denomination effectively obsolete before any commemorative program built around it could gain traction. Trial pieces in nickel were routinely struck to assess die performance and edge quality before committing to the intended alloy.
Ladislaus II Jagiełło, the subject here, founded the dynasty that ruled Poland-Lithuania for nearly two centuries. His selection for a 1989 issue carries a quiet irony: he unified fractured territories, while the government authorizing this coin was weeks away from losing power to Solidarity.
