| Beschrijving voorzijde | The Polish state eagle, rendered in high relief, occupies the central field with wings spread and head turned to the right, without a crown as befitting the People's Republic design. The circular legend POLSKA RZECZPOSPOLITA LUDOWA frames the eagle along the upper periphery, while the date 19 86 appears flanking the eagle's body at mid-field. The denomination ZŁ 500 ZŁ is prominently displayed in large numerals across the lower portion of the field. The mint mark MW appears below the eagle. The design, engraved by Stanisława Wątróbska-Frindt, reflects the standardized socialist-era obverse type used across the commemorative series. |

Poland's Environmental Protection series of the mid-1980s was conceived partly as a genuine conservation statement and partly as a hard-currency earner — collector issues in this period were a reliable source of Western exchange for the cash-strapped Polish state. Trial strikes like this nickel piece were produced to test dies and assess production parameters before committing to the final authorized composition, and most never entered official distribution channels. The ParM and Fischer catalog references confirm its status as a documented probe rather than an unauthorized fantasy.
