The Bank of Taiwan resumed note issuance under the newly arrived Nationalist administration in 1946, distinct from the wartime Taiwanese yen that had circulated under Japanese colonial authority. This 500 Yuan note belongs to the transitional series issued before hyperinflation on the mainland began distorting Taiwan's own monetary conditions — a separation that was never truly clean, since the Taiwan dollar had not yet been introduced and the island's currency remained entangled with the collapsing ROC financial system.
The Central Engraving and Printing Plant had relocated printing operations to Taiwan by this point, a logistical reality that would prove consequential as the Nationalist government's control of mainland facilities became untenable within a few years.
