Japan's 500 yen coin has been a persistent target for counterfeiters since its introduction in 1982 — at its peak exchange rate, it was briefly the highest-denomination coin in circulation anywhere in the world, making it worth the effort to fake. This Reiwa-era issue represents the first emission under Emperor Naruhito, whose reign began May 1, 2019 following Akihito's abdication, the first imperial abdication in Japan in over two centuries. The clad construction was introduced specifically as a counterfeit deterrent, exploiting the electrical conductivity difference between the layers for vending machine verification.
