Obverse description Central field features a finely detailed relief of a paulownia (kiri) plant, depicting broad lobed leaves and flowering branches in naturalistic style, a traditional Imperial Japanese motif. The design is encircled by a beaded inner border, beyond which four rectangular cartouches bearing kanji characters are positioned at the cardinal points of the inner ring. The legend 日本国 (State of Japan) appears at the top and 五百円 (500 Yen) at the bottom, rendered in Japanese script within the decorative cartouches.
