Obverse description Central design features a bell-shaped bronze dotaku vessel, as excavated from the Kamoiwakura site in Unnan City, Shimane Prefecture, rendered in fine relief with incised geometric patterns and pictograms characteristic of the Yayoi period. The dotaku is depicted in three-quarter view, displaying its distinctive raised fin (sakana) and decorative band ornamentation. The upper field bears the legend 日 本 国 (State of Japan) in Japanese characters, flanked by the romanized prefecture name SHIMANE and the kanji 島根県 below. The denomination 五 百 円 (500 Yen) appears in the lower field, all set within the bimetallic coin's nickel-brass outer ring.

Reverse description The central field of the copper-nickel inner disc depicts a stylized representation of an ancient cast mon coin, featuring a square central hole surrounded by boldly incised kanji characters arranged in the four cardinal positions, with latent image security elements incorporated into the design. A beaded inner border separates the centre from the nickel-brass outer ring, which carries the legend JAPAN 47 PREFECTURES COIN PROGRAM along the upper arc in Roman capitals. The lower arc of the outer ring bears the denomination 500 YEN in Roman script, followed by the Japanese era date 平成 20 年 (Year 20 of Heisei, 2008). The programme sequence indicator 地方(47/60)自治 appears in the field, identifying this coin as the 47th issue of the 60-coin Local Autonomy commemorative series.
