Part of the 47 Prefectures Coin Program, a multi-year Japanese Mint initiative that ran from 2008 to 2016, issuing two prefecture-themed 500 yen coins per year. Chiba Prefecture's selection for 2015 reflects the program's methodical geographic rotation rather than any particular commemorative occasion. The coins were sold in sets through Japan Post and were not intended for general circulation, which accounts for the consistently high state of preservation seen across the series.
