Beschrijving voorzijde Central field features a finely detailed depiction of a paulownia (kiri) plant in full bloom, displaying large, palmate leaves and upright clusters of tubular blossoms rendered in high relief. The botanical motif is framed above and below by decorative arc panels bearing stylized geometric ornaments. The legend 日本国 (State of Japan) is inscribed across the upper arc, while 五百円 (500 Yen) appears in the lower arc, all in Chinese characters. The entire design is enclosed within a beaded inner border and a plain outer rim.

Aanvullende informatie

Japan's 500 yen coin was the highest-value circulating coin in the world by face value for much of the 1990s, a distinction that made it an attractive target for counterfeiters. Particularly convincing fakes — produced in large numbers using 500 won South Korean coins as blanks — prompted a significant redesign in 2000, introducing latent image technology and a finely reeded edge with alternating sections, making this the most technically sophisticated circulating coin Japan had issued to that point.
