Aversbeschreibung The national coat of arms of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea is centrally depicted in high relief, featuring the Paektu Mountain landscape with a red star above, flanked by sheaves of rice bound with a ribbon, and a hydroelectric dam in the foreground. The circular legend in Korean script runs along the upper periphery, identifying the Central Bank of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea. The fineness '999' and the weight '17g' appear in the lower field to either side of the arms. The date '1995' is inscribed in the exergue, flanked by decorative sprigs.

Reversbeschreibung The FAO logo — depicting a stylized wheat sheaf above the motto 'FIAT PANIS' — is centrally placed within an ornate chain border flanked by laurel branches, evoking the fiftieth anniversary of the organization. The legend 'FOOD FOR ALL' arches prominently across the upper periphery in bold Latin capitals. Below the central emblem, the commemorative dates '1945-1995' are inscribed, marking the founding and anniversary years of the FAO. The denomination '500 WON' appears in the lower field in large characters. The overall design is struck in proof finish with deeply mirrored fields.

Zusätzliche Informationen

The FAO's 50th anniversary in 1995 prompted commemorative issues from dozens of mints worldwide, but North Korea's participation is notable given the country was simultaneously in the grip of a catastrophic famine — the Arduous March — that would kill an estimated 240,000 to 3.5 million people by the late 1990s. The regime's decision to issue a coin celebrating global food security while domestic harvests collapsed entirely was, at minimum, a pointed irony.

Struck for the export collector market rather than domestic circulation, virtually no North Korean commemorative silver of this period ever passed through local hands.
