Slovenia issued this coin on the 50th anniversary of the end of World War II in Europe, at a moment when the newly independent republic — having declared separation from Yugoslavia only four years earlier — was actively constructing a national historical narrative distinct from its federal past. The Slovenian experience under Axis occupation included the forced deportation of tens of thousands of civilians to concentration and labor camps, a fact the postwar Yugoslav state had folded into a broader pan-Yugoslav resistance story. This issue reclaimed that history as specifically Slovenian.
