This particular coin honors the Straits Times, the Singapore-based broadsheet founded in 1845, making it an unusual pairing — a landlocked Central Asian nation commemorating a Southeast Asian newspaper on a coin its own citizens would rarely handle or spend.
The series Mongolia ran through this period was largely contract-struck and distributed through overseas dealers, with Bank of Mongolia lending its issuing authority to topics chosen largely for export appeal.
