The da Vinci equestrian subject almost certainly references the unfinished Gran Cavallo commission — the monumental bronze horse Leonardo designed for Ludovico Sforza in the 1480s, never cast in Leonardo's lifetime after French forces used the clay model for target practice in 1499.
