Trial pieces for this 1969 Ugandan issue were produced in connection with Pope Paul VI's visit to Uganda in July of that year — the first papal visit to Africa in history. The Vatican's engagement with newly independent African nations was a deliberate diplomatic and ecclesiastical initiative, and Uganda, with its significant Catholic population dating to the martyrdoms of 1886, was the symbolic centerpiece.
