A highly detailed, close-up portrait of an adult African elephant (Loxodonta africana) dominates the central field, rendered in finely detailed high relief with tusks, wrinkled skin, and large ears prominently displayed. Foliage from an acacia tree extends from the upper right, and distant savannah scenery with birds in flight is visible in the background. The legend AFRICAN WILDLIFE curves along the upper periphery, while ELEPHANT is inscribed along the lower left arc. The fineness and weight designations 1/2 oz Au 999.9 appear along the lower right periphery, separated by raised dots. |

Somalia's Elephant bullion series has been issued annually since 2004, with the reverse design changed each year — a deliberate strategy borrowed from the South African Krugerrand and Austrian Philharmonic models to encourage year-on-year collector demand alongside standard bullion buyers. The half-ounce gold denomination sits between the more commonly traded one-ounce and the fractional quarter-ounce, making it less liquid on the secondary market than either neighbor in the series.
Despite the Somali nominal authority, these coins are produced by the Bavarian State Mint in Munich under licensing arrangements — the "Somalia" issuing authority is largely a legal fiction for collector purposes.
