| Obverse description | The Somali national coat of arms occupies the central field, depicting a shield supported by two leopards rampant, with an olive branch and crossed palm fronds below, and a five-pointed star at the center of the shield. The legend SOMALI REPUBLIC arcs along the upper periphery, while the date 20 21 is divided symmetrically to either side of the arms in the middle field. The denomination 500 SHILLINGS is inscribed along the lower periphery. The design is rendered in high relief against a polished proof field. |

Somalia's Elephant bullion series has been issued annually since 2004, with the reverse design changed each year — a deliberate strategy borrowed from the South African Krugerrand and Austrian Philharmonic models to encourage year-on-year collector demand alongside standard bullion buyers. The half-ounce gold denomination sits between the more commonly traded one-ounce and the fractional quarter-ounce, making it less liquid on the secondary market than either neighbor in the series.
Despite the Somali nominal authority, these coins are produced by the Bavarian State Mint in Munich under licensing arrangements — the "Somalia" issuing authority is largely a legal fiction for collector purposes.
