Obverse description The Somali national coat of arms occupies the central field, depicting a shield supported by two leopards rampant, with an olive branch and crossed palm fronds below, and a five-pointed star at the center of the shield. The legend SOMALI REPUBLIC arcs along the upper periphery, while the date 20 21 is divided symmetrically to either side of the arms in the middle field. The denomination 500 SHILLINGS is inscribed along the lower periphery. The design is rendered in high relief against a polished proof field.

Reverse description A highly detailed, close-up portrait of an adult African elephant (Loxodonta africana) dominates the central field, rendered in finely detailed high relief with tusks, wrinkled skin, and large ears prominently displayed. Foliage from an acacia tree extends from the upper right, and distant savannah scenery with birds in flight is visible in the background. The legend AFRICAN WILDLIFE curves along the upper periphery, while ELEPHANT is inscribed along the lower left arc. The fineness and weight designations 1/2 oz Au 999.9 appear along the lower right periphery, separated by raised dots.
