Nepal's tiger coinage of the early 1990s was issued under the Wildlife Conservation program, coinciding with international pressure on Kathmandu to address poaching and habitat loss in the Terai lowlands. The Bengal tiger population in Nepal had collapsed dramatically through the twentieth century before Project Tiger initiatives, supported in part by WWF funding, helped stabilize numbers in Chitwan and Bardia.
Birendra Bir Bikram, who authorized this issue, was killed in the royal massacre of June 2001 along with eight other members of the royal family.
