| Obverse description | Central field displays the crowned Portuguese royal arms — a quartered shield bearing the quintas (five escutcheons arranged in a cross, each charged with five bezants) and a border of castles — all surmounted by an elaborate royal crown. The armorial design is rendered in the hammered style characteristic of João IV coinage. The circular legend in Latin runs along the periphery within a beaded border, identifying the issuing sovereign. |

| Reverse description | Central field features a large cross of the Order of Christ (a patée cross with concave sides), occupying most of the die area, with pellets in the angles between the arms. Superimposed at the lower-left quadrant of the cross is a rectangular countermark applied during the reign of Pedro II (1688–1704), bearing a crowned cartouche enclosing the inscription 'S00' (or '500'), denoting the revalued denomination of 500 Réis. The circular Latin legend is distributed around the periphery within a rope-form border, with the mint mark and date visible in the lower exergual area. |
