Obverse description Bare-headed portrait of King Luís I of Portugal in left-facing profile, rendered in high relief with finely engraved hair curling naturally at the nape. The effigy occupies the central field, with the engraver's initials F.A.C. incuse beneath the truncation. The surrounding legend reads LUDOVICUS·I·PORTUG:·ET·ALGARB:·REX, interrupted at the base by the date 1863, all in Roman capital letters on a smooth field.

Reverse description The Portuguese royal coat of arms, comprising the traditional shield quartered with castles and five escutcheons bearing bezants, is displayed centrally in the field, surmounted by a royal crown with arches and orb. The shield is flanked by symmetrical foliate branches — an olive branch to the left and an oak branch to the right — tied together at the base with a ribbon bow. The word PROVA appears in the upper field above the crown, and the denomination 500 REIS is inscribed along the lower exergual area in bold Roman capitals.
