| Beschrijving voorzijde | Intaglio portrait of General José de San Martín occupies the right half of the note, rendered in purple-violet tones against a multicolour guilloche underprint of green, yellow, and red floral and geometric patterns. The denomination numeral 500 appears in large blue-purple digits at upper left and in a smaller intaglio panel at lower right, with the legend BANCO CENTRAL DE LA REPUBLICA ARGENTINA and QUINIENTOS Pesos Argentinos centred across the upper and middle fields respectively. Two facsimile signatures above the titles GERENTE GENERAL and PRESIDENTE are printed below the denomination text, with the nameplate Gral. SAN MARTIN inscribed beneath the portrait. |

The 500 Pesos Argentinos denomination was part of a short-lived currency introduced in 1983 to replace the collapsing Peso, at a conversion rate of 10,000 old Pesos to 1 Peso Argentino. The reform was largely cosmetic — inflation was already accelerating past any administrative fix, and within two years the Peso Argentino itself was being phased out in favor of the Austral.
By 1984, Casa de Moneda was printing notes under conditions of chronic monetary instability, with demand for high denominations outpacing the currency's real purchasing power almost immediately upon issue.
