Reverse description Central square cartouche bearing the denomination 500 in large Arabic-Western numerals with the Arabic word for ouguiya (أوقية) below, symbolising the currency. Flanking the cartouche at lower left is a raised camel head facing right, and at lower right a leaping fish, representing the pastoral and maritime resources of Mauritania. Above the cartouche, a detailed depiction of an iron ore conveyor and mining headframe alludes to the country's mineral industry. The Arabic legend of the Banque Centrale de Mauritanie curves along the upper periphery, and the engraver's name B. TURLAN appears incuse on the exergual line below the central cartouche.
