Mozambique's wildlife series of the late 1980s and early 1990s was produced almost entirely for the export collector market — hard currency was desperately needed, and the government's agreement with foreign minting contractors was one of the more pragmatic revenue strategies of the FRELIMO era. The country was still grinding through a civil war with RENAMO that had killed hundreds of thousands and displaced millions by 1990.
