Apolda's 500 Mark notgeld from 1922 belongs to the inflationary wave that swept German municipalities into emergency currency production as the Reichsmark collapsed. Thuringian towns like Apolda issued their own paper not out of administrative ambition but out of sheer necessity — the Reichsbank simply could not supply enough physical currency to keep local commerce moving.
The embossed seal was the Stadt's primary authentication device, cheap to apply and difficult to fake with basic equipment. It also meant production could stay entirely local, without involving a specialist printer.
