San Marino issued this piece at the height of NATO's 1983 Euromissile crisis, when the deployment of Pershing II and cruise missiles across Western Europe triggered mass protests and genuine public fear of nuclear escalation. The small republic had a long tradition of issuing thematic coinage that smaller nations with limited diplomatic leverage used as a form of political speech — and 1983 gave them plenty to say.
