Issued to commemorate the Cotroceni Monastery, originally founded by Șerban Cantacuzino in 1679 and largely demolished under Ceaușescu in the 1980s to make way for the Presidential Palace complex that now occupies the site. The monastery church was spared, but the broader monastic complex was not. This coin appeared roughly two decades after that demolition — early enough that the destruction was still within living memory for much of the Romanian public.
