The Tatra 603 entered production in 1956 as Czechoslovakia's prestige state limousine, built by the nationalized Tatra works in Kopřivnice. It was reserved almost exclusively for Communist Party officials and senior government figures — private ownership was functionally impossible. The air-cooled rear-mounted V8 was a point of genuine engineering pride, developed entirely behind the Iron Curtain without access to Western tooling or licensing.
This coin is part of the Czech National Bank's long-running series honoring historic Czechoslovak and Czech vehicles. The 603 remained in production until 1975, outlasting the political figures who had most conspicuously ridden in it.
