500 Korun Matica Slovenská Institute

Matica slovenská — the Slovak cultural and literary institute founded in 1863 — was suppressed twice: first by the Hungarian authorities in 1875, then again by the Slovak fascist government in 1944 before being re-established after the war. This 1988 commemorative marks the 125th anniversary of its original founding. The timing is quietly ironic: a communist Czechoslovak state celebrating an institution whose core purpose was the preservation of Slovak national identity, the very kind of sentiment the regime spent decades trying to subordinate to federalist ideology.
