Matica slovenská — the Slovak cultural and literary institute founded in 1863 — was suppressed twice: first by the Hungarian authorities in 1875, then again by the Slovak fascist government in 1944 before being re-established after the war. This 1988 commemorative marks the 125th anniversary of its original founding.
