The surrounding field is mirror-polished, with a beaded inner border running the full circumference. The legend 'THE LAO PEOPLE'S DEMOCRATIC REPUBLIC' arcs along the upper periphery in raised Latin capitals, while the denomination '500 KIP' appears at the bottom and the specifications '20 g' and 'Ag 999' are inscribed on either side of the emblem in the lower field. |

Laos has issued a consistent stream of wildlife-themed silver pieces aimed squarely at the collector market, with little to no intention of circulation. The Indochinese tiger, once ranging across much of mainland Southeast Asia, had an estimated wild population of fewer than 20 animals remaining in Laos by the time this coin was struck — a collapse driven by poaching and habitat loss so severe that the species is functionally extinct in the country.
