The Privilegirte Oesterreichische National-Bank was established in 1816 specifically to stabilize Austrian finances after the catastrophic Bancozettel inflation of the Napoleonic wars, during which the state had been forced to devalue paper currency by 80 percent through the 1811 Finanzpatent. These early gulden notes were part of that recovery effort — issued with hard convertibility obligations the bank struggled to honor in practice.
Danzinger was among the most prominent Viennese engravers of the period. At 500 Gulden, this was a very high denomination for domestic circulation in 1825, effectively a merchant and institutional instrument rather than anything passing through ordinary hands.
