| 背面描述 | The Haitian coat of arms occupies the central field, depicting a royal palm tree flanked by two cannons on cannon balls, with six Haitian flags arranged in a trophy-like composition on either side, all above a green grassy base. A ribbon banner across the lower portion of the arms bears the motto L'UNION FAIT LA FORCE. The legend LIBERTE EGALITE FRATERNITE curves along the upper rim within a beaded border. Below the arms, the denomination 500 GOURDES and the date 1977 are inscribed in the lower field in bold relief. |

Issued to mark the first anniversary of Jean-Claude "Baby Doc" Duvalier's marriage to Michèle Bennett in May 1980 — no, that's not right for 1977. This piece was struck during the early consolidation of Jean-Claude's presidency, which he inherited from his father François "Papa Doc" Duvalier at age nineteen in 1971. Haiti's gold commemorative program of the 1970s was effectively a hard-currency extraction scheme, with pieces minted abroad and sold to foreign collectors while the domestic population saw almost none of the revenue.
The Franklin Mint handled production of several Haitian gold issues from this period under contract.
