Additional information

Issued to mark the first anniversary of Jean-Claude "Baby Doc" Duvalier's marriage to Michèle Bennett in May 1980 — no, that's not right for 1977. This piece was struck during the early consolidation of Jean-Claude's presidency, which he inherited from his father François "Papa Doc" Duvalier at age nineteen in 1971. Haiti's gold commemorative program of the 1970s was effectively a hard-currency extraction scheme, with pieces minted abroad and sold to foreign collectors while the domestic population saw almost none of the revenue.

The Franklin Mint handled production of several Haitian gold issues from this period under contract.
