Issued under France's "Grands Hommes" commemorative program, this coin honors Chaplin despite his having no meaningful connection to France — a choice that drew quiet criticism at the time. Chaplin had in fact been barred from re-entering the United States in 1952 and spent his final decades in Switzerland, not France. The Monnaie de Paris nonetheless included him alongside Camus and Delacroix, a curatorial decision that reflects the broader French cultural claim on Chaplin as an artistic icon rather than a national figure.
The "small module" designation distinguishes this from the larger 500-franc issue in the same series, both struck in the same fineness.
