Chaplin had in fact been barred from re-entering the United States in 1952 and spent his final decades in Switzerland, not France. The Monnaie de Paris nonetheless included him alongside Camus and Delacroix, a curatorial decision that reflects the broader French cultural claim on Chaplin as an artistic icon rather than a national figure.
