| Obverse description | The obverse features the national coat of arms of the Republic of Benin at center, depicting a quartered shield with a castle and flags in the upper left, a star-like cross in the upper right, a palm tree in the lower left, and a sailing ship in the lower right, supported by two rampant panthers as dexter and sinister supporters, with decorative foliage above. Benin issues coins under the BCEAO framework — the West African Economic and Monetary Union — meaning it holds no independent minting authority and produces no circulating coinage of its own. This piece, like virtually all modern Beninese numismatic output, was contracted to a European private mint and sold directly to collectors. It never circulated in Cotonou or anywhere else.
