Beschrijving voorzijde Large effigy of an African woman facing left, her hair elaborately braided and gathered at the nape of the neck in a traditional style, rendered in high relief. The portrait fills most of the field, conveying a strong sculptural presence. The legend BANQUE DES ETATS DE L'AFRIQUE CENTRALE is inscribed in the right field, running vertically in multiple lines. The coin features a distinctive decagonal (ten-sided) inner raised border set within the round flan.

Beschrijving keerzijde The large denomination numeral 500 appears prominently in the upper field, with FRANCS inscribed below it. A naturalistic spray of cacao plant branches, bearing pods, leaves, and blossoms, fills the lower portion of the field in fine relief, symbolizing one of Cameroon's principal agricultural exports. The bilingual circular legend REPUBLIQUE DU CAMEROUN and REPUBLIC OF CAMEROON runs along the upper periphery, with the date centered in the exergue below the plant motif. The reverse likewise displays the decagonal inner border characteristic of the type.

Aanvullende informatie

The BEAC 500 Francs was issued for the six member states of the Central African Economic and Monetary Community — Cameroon, Central African Republic, Chad, Republic of the Congo, Equatorial Guinea, and Gabon — a currency union whose shared franc zone arrangement dates to the post-independence agreements with France in the early 1960s. Equatorial Guinea, notably, only joined the CFA franc zone in 1985 after abandoning the ekwele, making this series among the first coinage to circulate there under the BEAC umbrella.
