The Banque de l'Algérie operated as a note-issuing authority under French metropolitan supervision, and by 1947 it was navigating the immediate postwar monetary disorder that had swept through North Africa — including a 1945 currency exchange designed to soak up wartime hoards and occupation-era inflation. Notes of this denomination were printed by the Banque de France in Paris and shipped to Algeria, a logistical arrangement that made uninterrupted supply vulnerable to any disruption in the shipping lanes.
Poughéon was a Prix de Rome laureate whose work for French colonial currency spanned several decades; Hourriez and Armanelli were career engravers at the Banque de France atelier.
