Beschrijving voorzijde Central bimetallic insert depicting a stylised solar disc with radiating rays of varying lengths filling the gold outer ring, within which a crescent or globe motif bearing the Portuguese royal arms — the traditional quinas shield with five escutcheons — is set against a decorative foliate background in the silver centre. The legend REPUBLICA PORTUGUESA arcs along the upper periphery of the gold ring, while the denomination 500$00 is inscribed along the lower periphery, flanked by small decorative dots. The overall composition evokes themes of maritime discovery and national identity.

Aanvullende informatie

Padre António Vieira spent nearly four years before the Inquisition's tribunal — not for heresy in the conventional sense, but largely because his sermons defended the rights of Brazilian indigenous peoples and New Christian converts against the interests of Portuguese colonial landowners who had the ear of Rome. He was convicted in 1667, stripped of his right to preach, and confined. The sentence was eventually reversed through the direct intervention of Pope Clement X, who granted Vieira exemption from Portuguese Inquisitorial jurisdiction in 1675.

The KM#701b designation distinguishes this foil bimetallic variant from the standard issue — the gold ring here is foil-bonded rather than solid bimetal, a production method INCM employed selectively for certain commemorative runs in the 1990s.
