| Obverse description | Printed in purple on a multicolour guilloche underprint, the obverse carries an intaglio portrait of Caldas Xavier in military uniform at right, with the Portuguese coat of arms in the centre flanked by decorative vignettes. A bold black typographic overprint reading BANCO DE MOÇAMBIQUE and QUINHENTOS ESCUDOS is applied across the face of the note, superseding the original Banco Nacional Ultramarino issue dated Lisboa, 22 de Março de 1967. The denomination 500 appears in each corner, with ornate engine-turned borders framing the entire design. |
