Greece's stabilization loan of 1927–28, brokered under League of Nations supervision, was the direct catalyst for this series. The Bank of Greece itself had only been established in 1928, carved out of the old National Bank of Greece specifically to serve as a central bank with exclusive note-issuing authority — meaning this note is among the first ever issued under the institution's name.
ABNC's involvement was not incidental. Greek authorities deliberately contracted an American printer to signal distance from the inflationary chaos of the early 1920s, when the drachma had collapsed under wartime debt and the catastrophic costs of the Asia Minor campaign. The choice carried political weight beyond mere production logistics.
Pick #99 is the 500-drachmai denomination of that inaugural ABNC contract.
