Standard Chartered has issued banknotes in Hong Kong under the terms of its note-issuing licence, one of only three commercial banks permitted to do so under the oversight of the Hong Kong Monetary Authority, which holds equivalent notes as backing through the Exchange Fund. Giesecke+Devrient have printed for Standard Chartered's Hong Kong series across multiple decades, with the Leipzig facility handling high-denomination output. The $500 sits at the upper end of everyday transactional use in the territory.
