HMAS Australia was a Royal Australian Navy cruiser that served in both World Wars before being deliberately scuttled off Sydney Heads in 1924 — a send-off attended by thousands of spectators and considered one of the most ceremonially significant naval farewells in Australian history. Palau has issued commemorative gold pieces under its own authority since the 1990s, functioning effectively as a contract mint client state for collector programs with no meaningful domestic circulation.
