Below the arms, a detailed view of the Old Bridge (Stari Most) of Mostar spans the lower field, flanked by historic stone buildings on either bank. The circular legend REPUBLIKA BOSNA I HERCEGOVINA runs along the upper periphery, and the date 1996 appears in the lower exergual area, flanked by small ornamental devices including the Pobjoy Mint mark. |

Bosnia and Herzegovina's 1996 coinage was struck in the immediate aftermath of the Dayton Agreement, signed in December 1995, which ended three and a half years of war and effectively partitioned the country into two administrative entities. The National Bank issued this series partly to assert the existence of a functioning central monetary authority at a moment when that claim was anything but certain.
The goosander — a migratory diving duck found along Bosnian rivers — appeared on several denominations in this wildlife series, an unusual choice for a nation still operating under international supervision.
