Obverse description The coat of arms of the Republic of Bosnia and Herzegovina occupies the upper central field, depicting a shield bearing a diagonal band (bend) adorned with six fleurs-de-lis, flanked by elaborate foliate mantling. Below the arms, a detailed view of the Old Bridge (Stari Most) of Mostar spans the lower field, flanked by historic stone buildings on either bank. The circular legend REPUBLIKA BOSNA I HERCEGOVINA runs along the upper periphery, and the date 1996 appears in the lower exergual area, flanked by small ornamental devices including the Pobjoy Mint mark.

Reverse description The central field features a naturalistic depiction of a female Goosander (Mergus merganser) swimming to the left, with several ducklings riding on her back and swimming alongside in a water setting. A second goosander is shown in flight in the upper field, its wings extended. The conservation legend PRESERVE PLANET EARTH curves along the left and upper periphery in capital letters, and the denomination D500 is inscribed in the lower exergue.
