The Gambia has no constitutional or historical tie to the British Crown — it became a republic upon independence in 1970 and severed Commonwealth membership entirely between 2013 and 2018 under Yahya Jammeh. Issuing a commemorative piece honoring Charles III is purely a commercial decision, the kind routinely licensed through the Franklin Mint and similar operations to Pacific and West African nominal issuers who lend their currency authority to bullion and novelty pieces with no domestic circulation intent.
At a kilogram of copper, the intrinsic metal value is negligible — a few dollars at spot.
