Rwanda's Banque Nationale has issued a long-running series of silver botanicals and wildlife pieces aimed squarely at the thematic collector market, and this orchid entry is part of that program. These coins are legal tender in name only — Rwanda's GDP per capita in 2011 sat around $600, making a silver 500-franc piece purely a numismatic export product from the outset.
The toothbrush orchid, Dendrobium secundum, is native to Southeast Asia, not Rwanda — a geographic disconnect the issuer made no effort to explain.
