These coins are legal tender in name only — Rwanda's GDP per capita in 2011 sat around $600, making a silver 500-franc piece purely a numismatic export product from the outset.
The toothbrush orchid, Dendrobium secundum, is native to Southeast Asia, not Rwanda — a geographic disconnect the issuer made no effort to explain.
