Obverse description The national coat of arms of Rwanda is depicted centrally within a raised inner circle, featuring a shield with a knot motif, flanked by a sorghum plant and a coffee branch, with a sun above and a rope tied below. The legend BANKI NKURU Y'U RWANDA arcs along the upper periphery, with AG 999 to the left and the date 2011 to the right of the arms. The denomination AMAFARANGA 500 MAGANA ATANU is inscribed along the lower periphery in bold raised lettering. Rwanda's Banque Nationale has issued a long-running series of silver botanicals and wildlife pieces aimed squarely at the thematic collector market, and this orchid entry is part of that program. These coins are legal tender in name only — Rwanda's GDP per capita in 2011 sat around $600, making a silver 500-franc piece purely a numismatic export product from the outset.

The toothbrush orchid, Dendrobium secundum, is native to Southeast Asia, not Rwanda — a geographic disconnect the issuer made no effort to explain.
