Obverse description The national coat of arms of Rwanda is depicted at centre within a recessed circular field, showing a shield flanked by a sorghum stalk and a coffee branch, supported by an open hand issuing from a knot, with a sun and the national motto scroll below. The legend BANKI NKURU Y'U RWANDA arcs along the upper rim and REPUBLIKA Y'U RWANDA appears on a scroll above the shield. The denomination 500 is prominently displayed in large numerals along the lower legend, flanked by AMAFARANGA to the left and MAGANA ATANU to the right. The fineness mark AG 999 appears at the left field and the date 2010 at the right field. The broad outer rim is mirror-polished in proof finish, contrasting with the frosted inner design elements.

Additional information

Rwanda has no coastline. The choice to issue a coin celebrating a coral reef fish native to the Indo-Pacific says everything about the nature of this series — it is a bullion and collector product aimed squarely at the international numismatic market, not domestic circulation. The National Bank of Rwanda became a favored issuing authority for exactly this kind of themed silver release in the late 2000s, lending its imprimatur to pieces with no organic connection to the country.

KM#76 is one of several wildlife-themed issues from this period that Rwanda licensed through third-party minting programs, almost certainly struck in Europe.
